Reimbursements and TR

"As the emphasis on inpatient care decreases, accompanied with a shortening of patients' length of stay, a TR department could be threatened by possible staff reductions due to less demand for inpatient intervention, and a decreased ability to meet TR treatment goals during the inpatient stay. Outpatient services do not involve a per diem room rate, so unless the TR department charges on an ancillary basis for outpatient services or perhaps the facility can absorb the cost of providing services without producing charges, it is foreseeable that Therapeutic recreation will not be involved with the provision of outpatient services." (Malkin, Third Party Reimbursement for Outpatient Therapeutic Recreation Services, Annual in Therapeutic Recreation 3, 1992).
